Post, Tuesday, April 13, 1982 Marchand Has Family Smiling By Mario Pettineo For Rene Marchand, it had all the makings of a happy homecoming. With his parents, sister and girlfriend among the 1,316 in attendance last night at West Palm Beach Municipal Stadium, Marchand came through with a 3-for-4 performance, getting a double and two singles to drive in three runs as the West. Palm Beach Expos manhandled the Miami Marlins 9-1. It was the second straight night the Expos tore apart Miami pitching. Sunday night West Palm Beach won 15-6.

Marchand, 20-year-old from Ste. Anne-de-la-Perade, Quebec, singled to drive in a run in the fourth, doubled to drive in two in the fifth and singled in the seventh. A foul pop-up to Miami first baseman Edgar Castro in the second prevented a perfect evening. Not bad for a someone batting in the No. 8 spot in the order.

The 6-foot-1, 196-pound Marchand was also involved in five double plays. West Palm Beach's infield has now turned 10 in three games. "I felt a little nervous out there," said Marchand, who played briefly (only 3 at-bats) in West Palm Beach last season. "But I know my dad likes it when I hit the ball good." Marchand's parents, Gaeten and Jacqueliyne, and sister Ginette (who will all go back home in about a week) and girlfriend Sylvie watched Rene go through his successful 1 effort on an evening that might have been better suited for ice hockey. The low 60-degree temperatures didn't deter Marchand from his appointed swings.

But then he's used to frigid fields, having played amateur hockey for three years before finally signing an Expos contract. Marchand wasn't drafted out of high school and was all set to go to a Montreal Canadiens' tryout before Montreal Expos' manager Jim Fanning (then director of player development) heard about him and offered a contract. Marchand has not regretted hanging up his stick. "I love hockey," said Marchand, who now is 4-for-12 with seven RBI. "But I love baseball more." After playing for Calgary in the Pioneer League 1980, Marchand was en sent to West Palm Beach to replace an injured player.

But after going 1-for-3, Marchand found himself sitting on the bench. He was then sent to Jamestown in the New York-Penn League. He started off slow there, going 3- for-21 but wound up at .304. West Palm Beach struck early last night, scoring two runs, the first. Derrell Baker drove one with a sacrifice fly and Glen Stachiet got another home with a single up the middle.

The Expos added a run in the second after a single by Angel Salazar and a 01 00 00 0 0 -000 Expos' Willie Cooley is safe double by Jerome Coleman. Miami left fielder Frank Contreras misplayed Coleman's hit allowing Salazar to score. The Expos are now 2-1 in the Florida State League's Southern Division and tied for first place with Fort Lauderdale, which lost to Fort Myers 5-0. Miami drops to 1-3 with sole possession of last place. The Expos will play the Marlins again tonight in Miami at 7:30, and then will face Daytona Beach Wednesday night at home at 7:30.

Borchers as third as ball eludes Marlins' Robbie Alvarez Rose Signs With Phillies For Rest of Record Chase PHILADELPHIA (AP) Pete Rose, closing in on Ty Cobb's all-time majpr league hit mark, signed a contract yesterday that will keep him in a Philadelphia Phillies uniform throughout his pursuit of the record, the team announced.

The contract boosted the remaining two years on the first baseman's current contract and carries a year-byyear agreement through the 1986 season, during which Rose would turn 45 years old. The contract is estimated to be worth more than $1 million-ayear. Rose, the all-time National League hit leader with 3,700, is 491 hits short of Cobb's record 4,191. "Each year is a guaranteed figure," said Phillies President Bill Giles, accompanied by Rose and Rose's longtime advisor, Reuven Katz. "At end of each year, the Phillies have the option to review Pete's performance and status for the following season.

"He'll be playing for us when he breaks Ty Cobb's record, whether it's in 1984 and however long it takes."
