B4 The Post, Saturday, January 9, 1982 WINDWARD LEGAL NOTICE- Rehnquist Dodges Health Questions arguments Monday when the court reconvenes after a nearly month-long recess. Among the unanswered questions: What drug has Rehnquist been taking for his chronic back pains? Has he switched to another drug following the withdrawal reaction during his recent hospitalization? What is the long-term outlook for Rehnquist's health? At 57, he is the youngest man on the Supreme Court and holds his position for life. Rehnquist, the court's most conservative member, marked his 10th anniversary on the bench Thursday. He was by President Nixon in 1971 and joined the court Jan. 7, 1972.

Neither the hospital nor Rehnquist's personal physician, Dr. Hugo Rizzoli, has said what drug Rehnquist has been taking for the back problems. The justice has experienced chronic back pain for about 10 years. Both the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times, quoting doctors familiar with the case, have said Rehnquist byd been taking a drug known as Placidyl. The drug is a prescription sleeping pill recommended by its manufacturer for short-term use only.

WASHINGTON (AP) The office of Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist yesterday shunted aside mounting questions about the justice's health and the drug or drugs he has been taking for back pains. Rehnquist did not respond yesterday to requests from news reporters for clarification of his medical situation and the noticeable slurring in his speech. The justice returned to work Tuesday after a week-long stay in George Washington University Hospital where he was treated for a withdrawal reaction to a reduction in the dosage of a drug be was taking for back pain. Dr.

Dennis O'Leary, a hospital spokesman, said the speech impediment was related to use of the drug. The latest queries included a joint written request from 10 major news organizations seeking a news conference or a written statement from Rehnquist. A secretary in Rehnquist's office, who declined to give her name, said yesterday that the justice had received the written request, but she refused to say when or whether he would respond. The secretary said that Rehnquist had been putting in full days of work since returning to the court. She added that Rehnquist expects to listen to oral Area Deaths West Palm Beach.
