CAMPBELL Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Although there were 1,000 fewer Florida Lottery vendors than expected, people snapped up new numbers game tickets at a pace that could set a national record, officials said Friday. A combination of human and technical difficulties gave the lottery some problems. Only 2,100 computers were on line Friday morning out of the 3,100 expected, said Jim Oman, lottery director for Palm Beach and Martin counties.

The first number drawn, at 7:57 p.m. in Tallahassee, was 806 in the new Cash 3 game, which has a top prize of $500. The first winning numbers in the six-number Lotto game which will have a $2 million jackpot will be drawn May 7. Tickets for the new games went on sale at 7:30 a.m. Friday, and sales by 4 p.m.

totaled $545,428. That put the lottery on a pace that would mean more than $1.5 million in sales in the first 24 hours. The sales pace didn't come close to matching the mania surrounding the introduction of instant scratch-off tickets Jan. 12, when there were sales of $20 million, breaking almost every national lottery sales record. But Lottery Secretary Rebecca Paul has said numbers game ticket sales always start slowly before eventually outselling the scratch-off games.

The national record for numbers game sales in the first 24 hours apparently belongs to California, with $1.2 million, according to lottery officials elsewhere. Bob Taylor, a spokesman for the California Lottery, said Florida's sales numbers were impressive because the state, with 12.5 million people, has less than half the population of California. "That's sounds like a fairly ambitious program that Florida's engaged in," he said. Computer problems, however, plagued Paul at the lottery's opening ceremony. The symbolic switch activating the games was flipped at 7:25 a.m.

A stewardess was blown out of the Boeing 737, and 60 of the 89 passengers and remaining crew of four were injured before the plane made a safe emergency landing Thursday. "I heard a loud explosion, and I saw my bag from under the seat in front of me fly right out of the aircraft," said David Kupihea, who was in the first-class section at the front of the plane. A piece of conduit ripped loose from the plane and punctured Ku-pihea's arm.

"I kept my head down; I pulled out my life vest; I used it as a cushion. You can see the wind blowing in your face," he said. Sources said a structural failure and not a bomb may have caused the "big bang" that ripped open the jet. The aircraft, which was cruising at 24,000 feet on an island hop from Hilo to Honolulu, flew about 15 minutes with 20 feet of its upper fuselage just behind the front passenger door torn away to the floor. Witnesses said one engine was on fire.

"We're both thrilled to be newly-weds after being together for 6V2 years," Reynolds said, 52, through spokesman Peggy Gossett. "I love to be a newlywed at my age." Reynolds and Anderson, who met in 1981 during a Merv Griffin talk show, planned a five-day honeymoon in the Bahamas aboard The Golden Eagle, a yacht owned by St. Louis beer baron August Busch, Gossett said.
