He was 50.

Mr. Carver, who was married last June to the poet Tess Gallagher, died soon after finishing a book of poetry, A New Path to the Waterfall. Mr. Carver came from the hard-scrabble world of the down-and-out characters in his stories. "I'm a paid-in-full member of the working poor," he said in an interview with The New York Times.

Mr. Carver published 10 books of prose and poetry in a career shadowed by alcoholism, poverty, a broken marriage and cancer. Mr. Carver said a 1988 interview that he viewed his troubled life as an emotional reservoir to draw upon for his fiction. Mr.

Carver, who was born in Clatskanie, the son of a sawmill worker and a waitress, was a janitor, a farm worker, a delivery boy. He wrote in his spare time. Joe Carcione, 'Green Grocer' of television The Associated Press BURLINGAME, Calif. Joe Carcione, who has offered millions of people consumer tips as TV's "Green Grocer," has died after a long battle against intestinal cancer.

He was 73. Mr. Carcione, who began his career in his father's produce market after high school, died Tuesday at Peninsula Hospital of cardiac arrest, said his son-in-law, Charlie Erie. The gravelly voiced produce expert, whose trademark was his pronunciation of "VEG-ee-tibles," was famous for his weekly radio and television spots in which he told consumers about produce bargains and pitfalls. He also wrote two books.

At his peak, Mr. Carcione wrote three newspaper columns a week, produced TV and radio spots that reached 10 million people and earned $500,000 a year. He attributed his success to his sincerity. Both were members of Coral Ridge United Methodist Church where they were active in the ministry of the church and in the Girl Scouts Movement in Ft. Lauderdale. A memorial service will be held at The Community Covenant Church, 1510 High Ridge Road in Lake Worth, Saturday, August 6, 1988 at 11:00 a.m.
