THE PALM BEACH POST WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 1987 Former Monsanto official Hochwalt Belle Glade winter visitor 'Aunt 109 By DEAN JONES Palm Beach Post Staff Writer BELLE GLADE Friends of Lula "Aunt Lou" Freeman, 109, who died Thursday night at the home of her niece, may visit from 4 to 8 p.m.

today at St. John First Baptist Church, 600 S.W. Eighth St. Mrs. Freeman died in her sleep during her annual visit to Belle Glade, said her niece, M.C.

"Kitty" Collins of 609 S.W. 12th St. The funeral and burial will be in Mrs. Freeman's hometown of Waynesboro, Ga. Collins said she can remember her aunt driving a mule and plow, and sometimes a plow with a two-mule hitch, for 15 cents a day in the early 1920s, shortly after her first husband died.

"She raised cotton, corn, peanuts and peas, blackeyes and crowders," Collins said. "She would be in the field by daylight and work until the bell rang, then come in and get her food and go back to the field just like the men. "I can remember when I was young, we thought we were rich because we raised everything we needed on the farm," Collins said. "We were always full, and we didn't buy hardly anything from the store." Mrs. Freeman called Georgia her home all her life, leaving for the first time in 1968 when Collins brought her to Belle Glade to visit.

She said her aunt had visited about three months of the year every winter since then. "She had a stroke March 22," Collins said, "but until then, she lived alone and cooked and did everything that needed doing around her house. She had lived alone since her second husband died in 1952. We tried to bring her down here during the coldest months of the year." While she was in Belle Glade, Mrs. Freeman helped her niece at her barbecue stand at Southwest Fifth and Avenue keeping Collins company and doing work such as peeling potatoes.

"She was always religious," Collins said, "and when she was here, she never missed a church service or a prayer meeting. The last words I heard her say was, 'I'm just waitin' on Her whole life was centered around God and church."
