2C THE PALM BEACH POST FRIDAY, JUNE 9, 1989 SAIIS-A-DELT ann helps make golf game fit SIZES FROM 34-54 i 20 lled 'fort'1 OPEN 7 PAYS pX JtS iri ri SOUTHOALE SHOPPING CENTER KM SonfW limn He also has just produced four fitness videos, and there's a 20 percent crossover between those who buy the golf videos and the fitness videos. "In one of the fitness videos, we have a couple of exercises involving a golf club and a bath towel that apply to golf," 5 mteqM Larry Jackson TVRADIO i3P I This week we're channel-flipping: In search of the automatic par: Golf and fitness instructor Bob Mann has taken his highly successful Automatic Golf Method video to the airwaves. Bob Mann's Automatic Golf Method has sold 900,000 copies since 1982, and WTVX-Channel 34 will be showing excerpts for the next three Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. This is not an anthology show, where you may pick up one or two tips on improving your game. Each show is 24 minutes of pure instruction culled from his two tapes (the second video is called Son Of Automatic Golf: Specialty Shots).

"The sections include putting, sand play, an explanation of the power source where your power comes from golf motor movements, and how to draw the ball," Mann said Thursday from his Malibu, fitness center. "There's a long section on putting, and two or three different sand shots, for example." Mann, who also has written two books on golf instruction, said the telecasts on WTVX "are not teaser shows. They're instruction modules taken from the videos." Asked if he worried about players taping the shows at home to avoid buying the videos, he said, "That happens at home; they do it all the time. But they're only getting 24 minutes, whereas the videos are an hour and a half." Florida roots Mann is originally from Daytona Beach, but moved to California in 1981. He tried out for the PGA Tour in the Class of '68, which included Bob Murphy, Mac McClendon and Tony Jacklin.

"I missed the cut by eight strokes," he said with a laugh. From there, he went into club manufacturing, then spent six years in the University of Florida's Athletic Department. Since 1980 he's been conducting seminars around the country. Old Dolphins always resurface: Former wide receiver Jimmy Cefalo has been hired by SportsChannel America to anchor its Sports Nightly scoreboard show and to do some play-by-play. Cefalo, who begins his new assignment Thursday, worked a weekdaySunday morning co-anchor slot during NBC's coverage of the Seoul Olympics last year, and did color on NFL regional telecasts.

He also has been an announcer for Miami's WTVJ-Channel 4. Media wars: NBC's Bob Costas is mad at Sports Illustrated writer Franz Lidz, who criticized him for (among other things) being too soft in his approach to baseball specifically umpiring on the Game Of The Week. Costas countered by saying that "nobody in his right mind wants to turn on the Game Of The Week or a football game on Sunday and hear someone preach to him about all of the ills of the NCAA, or about everything that's wrong with sports in America." No, but by the same token, it wouldn't hurt to be more thorough occasionally. At the risk of being repetitious, I brought up in a post-Super Bowl column that NBC's pre-game coverage of the Stanley Wilson incident consisted largely of a microphone stuck in Cris Collinsworth face as he made his way from the bus to the dressing room. And that it was a perfect opportunity for the network to address the NFL's drug problems in general.

Costas hosted that pre-game show. Oh, so that's it: CBS's Dick Stockton cut right to the heart of The NBA Finals in Game 1 Tuesday night when he said, "Putting the ball in the basket is what this game is all about." For those who might have been left wondering about other keys to victory, there's also five guys to a side and four 12-minute quarters. ROYAL PALM BEACH COUNTRY CLUB PAR 72 CHAMPIONSHIP PUBLIC COURSE Mann said. "They're intended to make golfers who are desk-ridden during the week more aware that if they're in shape, they can hit the ball farther and avoid pulled muscles." The fitness videos also are scheduled to be half-hour television shows in the fall. Open coverage: ABC and ESPN team up next week for the U.S.

Open Championship at Oak Hill Country Club, with 17 hours of coverage over four days. (More if there's a playoff, as last year when Curtis Strange won.) ESPN will televise Thursday and Friday from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., with ABC showing highlights at 11:30 those nights. ESPN will re-broadcast portions of its telecasts from p.m. ABC takes over the coverage Saturday from p.m.

and Sunday from p.m. After the war is over: If you can't go to the closed-circuit showing of Monday's Thomas Hearns-Sugar Ray Leonard bout Monday night in Las Vegas (or don't want to, for that matter), ESPN will televise the post-fight press conference live immediately following the bout.
