6B THE PALM BEACH POST SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, 1991 NEWS Deputy gets for aiding Officer helped pay bail for actor-friend The Associated Press SARASOTA A Sarasota County sheriff's deputy was suspended for a day for helping Paul Reubens of Pee-wee Herman fame post bail following his arrest last week on indecent exposure charges. Cpl. Joan Verizzo, a longtime friend of Reubens, said the actor called her from the adult theater where he was arrested for allegedly exposing himself and masturbating. Reubens, 38, told her he didn't have enough money to post the $219 bail, she told her superiors in a written statement. "He was $40 short, so she gave him $40," sheriff's spokesman William Stookey said.

It is a violation of department policy for deputies to post bail for anyone other than members of their immediate family. Stookey said posting bail for others could be considered a conflict of interest. Verizzo, 38, will serve her suspension without pay after she returns from maternity leave, probably in mid-August, Stookey said. suspension 'Pee-wee' star "I made a small loan to Paul out of loyalty to a longtime friend, izzo said in the statement. "I am a who I consider to be family," Verdedicated, conscientious officer.

If the department feels there was a mistake on my part, it was unintentional." She said Reubens didn't contact a bail bondsman because he wanted to get out "as quickly as possible and involve as few persons as possible." The star of the children's television program Pee-wee's Playhouse was arrested July 26. He has denied misdemeanor charges he exposed himself in an X-rated theater. Reubens, a graduate of Sarasota High School, was in town visiting his parents when he was arrested. CBS dropped reruns of Reubens' show after his arrest and Disney -MGM Studios in Florida pulled a video starring the nerdy, bow-tied Pee-wee from a theme park tour. Lionel Leisure owners of Lionel Playworld and other Lionel toy stores in 15 states, told managers this week to remove all Peewee items, said the manager of a Tampa Playworld.
