Pulitzer Prize-winning war reporter Ira Wolfert, whose first novel, Tucker's People became the basis of the cult movie Force of Evil, has died at 89.

Mr. Wolfert lived in Lake Hill, 46 miles southwest of Albany, and died Monday at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Mar-garetville. A series of stories Mr. Wolfert wrote about a November 1942 sea battle off Guadalcanal won him the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting. A correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance during World War II, he also won acclaim for his 1943 book Tucker's People.

Battle for the Solomons, a non-fiction eyewitness account, was published in 1943 and became a bestseller, as did his 1948 novel An Act of Love. American Guerrilla in the Philippines became a 1950 movie of the same name. Tucker's People was republished earlier this year by the University of Illinois Press. Mr. Wolfert, a Brooklyn native, drew from his experience as a reporter covering racketeering trials to write the book.

Mr. Wolfert collaborated with Abraham Polonsky to write the screenplay for Force of Evil. The 1948 movie, starring John Garfield, was dismissed as boilerplate gangster drama, but has become popular with contemporary audiences. He is survived by a daughter, Ruth Wolfert, of Manhattan; a son, Michael, of Lake Hill; and four grandchildren. J.

Jk i vrn a vn issirn Children and Grandchildren OPPLER In Loving likUJM Palm Beach pioneer ran liquor, built successful real estate business Police want to purchase range with seized goods By Teresa Lane Palm Beach Post Staff Writer PORT ST. LUCIE Success in busting drug dealers could result in a more effective arsenal for catching other criminals. Police are seeking permission to build a firing range and training compound using $100,000 worth of goods seized from criminals. Thwarted in efforts to build the range on 16 acres of city-owned land just south of St Lucie West, police have turned their attention to a 51-acre tract just south of the initial site that Atlantic Gulf Communities has offered to sell for $270,000. Police Chief John Skinner estimates he has about $100,000 worth of goods seized in recent drug cases to make a down payment on the tract and believes he'll have the rest within five years.

The earlier proposal met with resistance from nearby St Lucie West homeowners, who feared the outdoor shooting range would produce loud noises and stray bullets. Although police said they could have adequately screened the firing range to protect neighbors, they believe the larger size of the AGC tract will make it easier to reassure neighbors. In addition to a firing range, Skinner hopes to build a training compound for the SWAT team and K-9 officers at the site. The 124-member department now uses Fort Pierce facilities operated by the St Lucie County Sheriffs Office and Indian River Community College for mandatory training courses. rare plants and trees in his backyard garden.

He was a past vice president of the Rare Fruit Coun cil of South Palm Beach, and ac tive in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, as well as the Elks and Rotary clubs. In later years, he acknowl edged that his own success in real estate had helped erase the island's simple pioneer existence he so treasured. "I don't think you could have done any different," he told a re porter in 1985. Progress is something you just can't hold back." Mr. Reese was interred Friday in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Marvin Goldstein, an orthodontist and businessman who opened Atlanta's first integrated hotel, defying segregationists, died Saturday at his Atlanta home. He was 80. Dr. Goldstein's hotel, the American, opened in 1964, became a haven for black people turned away by other establishments and for civil-rights workers. Stephen McNichols Stephen McNichols, a liberal Democrat who served as governor of Colorado as the state was emerging from its agrarian past, died Tuesday at University Hospital in Denver.

He was 83 and lived in Denver. The cause was heart failure, his family said. Mr. McNichols, a lawyer, was Colorado's 35th governor, serving from 1957 to 1963. "When I was about 7, 1 had a stand in front of E.R.

Bradley's Beach Club," he remembered in 1994. "I called Mr. Bradley 'Uncle since our families were close friends. I sold lucky beans, all kinds of flowers, mangoes, avocados and other fruit and even baby alligators." He knew U.S. 1 when it was paved with shells, and Belvedere Road as a sandy trail.

As a charter boat captain during Prohibition, he said, he sometimes carried liquor to Palm Beach from the Bahamas, and was once let go when the local Coast Guard commander recognized him as an old friend. His passengers had already tossed their illicit cargo overboard, he recalled. But two bottles of Scotch, hidden in his oilskin slicker, got through. Mr. Reese kept the flavor of early Palm Beach alive by raising Area deaths questa.
