2 THE PALIA BEACH POST, Sept. 15, 1955 Airline Pilots Say Godfrey Guilty Of Careless Flying WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 (A) A complaint of careless flying, lodagainst TV Star Arthur Godfrey two airline pilots, stirred anew today a bitter dispute between airline and private pilots over responsibility for near collisions. Godfrey was accused by the pilot and co-pilot Ozark Airlines twin engine DC-3 airliner of flying too close to their plane shortafter takeoff from Midway airport last Wednesday. Godfrey denied to a reporter late yesterday that he had broken any flying rule.

He acknowledged his faster, more powerful DC-3 overtook the airliner that left the airport just ahead of him. But he said he kept the other plane in view all the time, remaining above and to one side of it, then dipped his wings in salute and turned off to the right when it appeared that the airliner was then making the same wide sweep to left that he had planned. The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) is investigating the Ozark complaint. Last year the agency suspended Godfrey's flying license for six months on the grounds that he buzzed the Teterboro, N. control tower.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots (AOPA) here repeatedly has defended private fliers against implications that they are largely to blame for collisions and near-collisions between large and small craft. The airline pilots, meanwhile, have made it plain they consider private flyers, in crowded air traffic zones, among their hazards. Commenting on the Chicago incident, Joseph B. Hartranft, AOPA President, said that Godfrey always flies his DC-3 in company with a professional pilot. Hartranft also ventured a guess in an interview, that Godfrey's plane is better equipped with modern safety devices than was the Ozark airliner.

Leonard voiced the hope as David Walsh, 17, only one to contract the dread bulbar type polio, hovered between life and death in Rockford township hospital. thought David wouldn't last the Leonard said, "but he seems to be holding his own and has a 50-50 chance to live." The doctor said David was in a critical stage of the disease that would last for several days. Three other Walsh children were in hospitals and four more were under care at the family's farm home near here. But there had been no new outcropping of the disease since the weekend and Leonard said, "I can't say for sure, but I think it has run its course." Walsh, 53, and his wife, 45, kept an all-night vigil Tuesday at David's bed and then went home exhausted to rest. "They're wonderful, but just depressed terribly," Leonard said of the stunned parents.

"They're walking around in a sort of The doctor lost one of his own children in a polio epidemic 10 years ago. Samples of water were taken from the Walsh well and analyzed at the city health department in nearby Rockford to see if the water could be the source of the wholesale infection. Dr. N. O.
