THE PALM BEACH POST TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2004 PBIA planning hike of its parking rates Palm By CONNIE, PILOTON Palm Beach International Airport plans to boost rates for most parking by at least 25 percent and eliminate 20 minutes of free parking in short-term spaces. The hikes will take effect sometime in March traditionally PBIA's busiest month if county commissioners approve the increases at a meeting today. Airport officials say the increase is needed to help cover the skyrocketing cost of security and to provide parking attendants with a "living wage" under a new contract. The short-term rate would rise from 75 cents to $1 per half-hour. The long term daily rate would rise from $8 to $10 and the parkand-ride or economy lot would rise from $4 to $5 a day.

Airport officials said PBIA's rates still are cheap when compared with other Florida airports. "Our parking rates are the lowest in the state and will still be among the lowest," said Michael Simmons, director of PBIA's fiscal division. "But our costs have gone up." Simmons said post-Sept. 11 security mandates pushed the cost of protecting the airport to $7 million last year, compared with $5 million a year before the terrorist attacks. Most of the security at the airport deputies, K-9 units, bomb squads and other specialized protection is provided by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

The passenger and baggage screeners are hired by the Transportation Security Administration and paid by the federal government. The additional parking money is needed even though more passengers than ever are using the airport a record 6 million in fiscal 2003. Parking generated $9.9 million in 2003, compared with $9.2 in 2002 and $10.5 in 2001. The new rates are expected to bring in another $2.6 million a year. Aside from covering operating costs, the money also will be used for future parking improvements, Simmons said.

The rate increases also are being triggered by PBIA's new contract with a parking management firm that is $400,000 higher. That's because shuttle-bus drivers and parking attendants will be paid wages and receive health benefits comparable with those required of other contractors under the county's new "living wage" PBIA's planned parking increase The short-term parking rate would rise from 75 cents to $1 per half hour. No longer would the first 20 minutes be free. The maximum $12 daily rate would not change. 1 The rate for the premium lot near baggage claim would remain at $1 per half hour, or $24 per day.

long-term rate would increase from $8 per day to $10. The park-and-ride lot rate would rise from $4 per day to $5. I The new rates are expected to go into effect in mid-March. Parking rates Here's how the proposed new daily rates compare with those at other Florida airports: SHORT TERM LONG TERM ECONOMY PBIA $12 $10 $5 Fort Lauderdale $36 $12 $6 Miami $25 $12 Tampa $14 $10 Orlando $15 $15 $7 Fort Myers $18 $10 $6 Jacksonville $14 $4 is $11, open lot is $8 Source: Palm Beach International Airport ordinance. "We're offering better pay so we can hire better employees and retain them," Simmons said.

"It used to be a revolving door." The airport has purchased new shuttle buses, added a "cellphone" lot and expanded the park-and-ride economy lot all of which added to parking overhead. The 24-space cellphone lot allows drivers free parking while they wait for friends and family to arrive and call them to be picked up. "They can relax until they get the call," Simmons said. "It prevents drivers from having to circle around and around." If parking fees are not increased, the airport would have to charge the airlines more which in turn would boost ticket prices and discourage carriers from adding more flights. Simmons said the airport already has increased landing and gate fees for airlines.

"If I don't, I hurt all over," she says. "I'm miserable. Plus, there's the guilt." When you think gym rat, you don't necessarily think of somebody with grandkids and an AARP card. But that's largely the group Johnson works with.

The senior set which, at 1,000 memberships, is about a quarter of the Y's uses paid list is the group that most consistently the facilities, she said and renews their memberships. Jim Mazza, who had an abdominal aneurysm a few years back, was always active, but never inside a gym. He says his son took him for a workout about six years ago. "We liked it," he said. "We came right home and joined." For the Mazzas, their two hours on those machines are more than just a way to get out of the house.

Lorene Mazza is like an advertisement for endorphins, those hormone released during exercise. I read about them once. "I'm able to do more," says Mazza, who had a heart attack and a triple bypass in 1997. "After I exercise, I always feel like doing more." Her hubby says he works out because it makes him "too tired to worry about Gym helps woman deal with husband's death The Mazzas might joke about what exercise does for them, but Johnson says there's no doubt her clients who, like all members, are privy to on-site personal trainers feel better. "They're the first ones to tell our younger members, whether they be 50 or 10, that they like being here," Johnson said.

Metz is testimony to this. During her two hours at the gym, she bench presses free weights. She does crossovers and the rowing machine and the elliptical. I saw a rowing machine once. "It's taken me through so many bad times, like when my husband died," she says.

"It does something for me physically, but also mentally. I come here and forget." The Gersteins do their workouts at the same time, but separately. Jean is slim and fit, but has battled bulge all her life, she says. She's got arthritis, but still walks 6 miles every day. Her husband says he doesn't know how he'd feel if he didn't work out, because he always does.

Of course, there are other benefits of going to the gym when you're retired. You've got time for the actual workout, and for what comes next. The Mazzas work like dogs her, sometimes reading a book while she's on the stationary bike; him, listening to music on his headset while he's on the treadmill. Then they go home, maybe eat some lunch. "I have a nap," she says.

"I don't do anything too strenuous," says Lorene Mazza, working up a nice sweat on the treadmill. Modest, of course. I hear those endorphin- things do that to you. Coconut Creek. Funeral today.
