THE PALM BEACH POST FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1998 msl High schools Records fall; Cooke, Krna medal 4A state swimming Today's Class 5A state swimming WHERE International YMCA Aquatic Center, Orlando. WHEN: Swimming prelims, 9 a.m.; girls diving, 10 a.m.; boys diving, 2 p.m.; swimming finals, 7 p.m. OUTLOOK: This meet could produce as many as three individual state champions from Palm Beach County. Adam Brock of William T. Dwyer has the top qualifying time (21.31 seconds) of the 40 entries in the boys 50-yard freestyle.

Brock's qualifying time, which came during a meet record at last week's district championships, is less than a second off the all-time state record. Brock also has a shot at a gold medal in the 100-yard freestyle. His district record-setting time of 48.04 seconds is the third-fastest qualifying time for the state meet. Morgan Baer of Boca Raton also qualified for two individual events, but the sophomore's best shot at a gold medal will be in the 200-yard individual medley. His qualifying time of 1:57.57 is the third-fastest among the qualifiers.

Baer's teammate, Firat Cologlu, could challenge Brock in tonight's 50 freestyle final. Cologlu was runner-up to Brock at last week's district meet with a time of 21.96, but both are seeded in different heats for this morning's prelims. Allison Moore of Palm Beach Gardens and Cary Gouldy of Jupiter are among the top five qualifiers in the girls 50 freestyle. Boca Raton's boys team, which was runner-up at last year's 5A state meet, expects to place among the top three this year. Defending boys champion Fort Lauderdale-St.

Thomas Aquinas is favored, with Boca Raton, Fort Myers and Tallahassee-Leon expected to challenge. Jupiter is the top area girls team. Boca Raton qualified 13 girls for the state meet, but eight are freshmen. St. Thomas is favored to capture the girls title.

DIRECTIONS: Take the Turnpike north to Orlando, take 1-4 west toward Tampa, exit at Sand Lake make left, go about one-half mile and make right on International Drive, pool is about one-half mile on right next to the Radisson Hotel. Steve Dorsey By Steve Dorsey Palm Beach Post Staff Writer ORLANDO The search for gold was a ruble one for local swimmers Thursday night at the Class 4A state swimming and diving championships. In fact, silver and bronze were tough to find, too, at the YMCA Aquatic Center. The meet, annually one of the best in the nation, saw 13 records fall all by Jacksonville-Bolles and Winter Park-Trinity Prep boys and girls. "I think it's got to be the fastest meet in America," said Susan Cooke of St.

Edward's. "It's amazing just to be here." Cooke, who hopes to swim at Yale next year, was one of only two swimmers from the area to place in the top three of any event Thursday. The other was Andy Krna of St. Andrew's. Cooke, who placed fifth in the 100-yard breast stroke, took the bronze medal in the girls 200-yard individual medley, which combines all four strokes.

She shaved almost a full 4 seconds off her previous fastest and area-ieading time, but Cooke needed to clock almost 4 seconds faster than that to win the Championship final Thursday night. That is indicative of how spectacular a performance was turned in by Bolles swimmers, who set eight of the 13 various records. As expected, Bolles swept the boys and girls team titles. Bolles' boys shattered two national records and came close to breaking another. Watkins (Tnnity Prep) 55.60; 2.

Cocoa Beach (4-5) at Pahokee (10-0) ABOUT COCOA BEACH: Upsetting the No. 1-ranked team in the state may be a little too much to ask of the Min-utemen, who nonetheless have a 1000-yard rusher in running back Jose Gulbert, who rushed for 1,014 Class 6A Fort Lauderdale Dillard (7-3) at Santaluces (9-1) ABOUT DILLARD: The District 10-6A runner-ups to Coconut Creek have a strong tandem at running back with Jimmy Jones, who has eight touchdowns and 754 yards rushing and Cornelius Fuller, who has rushed for 497 yards and has scored six touchdowns. ABOUT FORT MYERS: The Green Wave, who last season lost in a district tiebreaker and finished as the District 13-5A runner-up, beat Estero in Monday's district tiebreaker to clinch the district championship.

Class 3A Pope John Paul (8-2) at Melbourne Central Catholic (9-0) ABOUT POPE JOHN PAUL The Eagles, whose eight wins are the most in school history, rely on a balanced of By Julius Whigham II Palm Beach Post Staff Writer As practice wound down, Thursday evening for the South' Fork football team, coach Paul Krasula and South Fork underclassmen exchanged handshakes and high-fives with the South Fork seniors to thank them for their four years of accomplishments, o- But the Bulldogs aren't exactly planning a going-away par ty just yet.

"1 Tonight, South Fork (7-3) begins what it hopes will be a lengthy stay in the Class 5A state playoffs when it hosts Estero (9n 1) in a first-round matchup that kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Estero, the District 13-5A runner-up, will bring one of the top offenses in southwest Florida east to face a Bulldogs defense that has been one of the area's1 stingiest. South Fork's defense has held all but two opponents Melbourne-Palm Bay and Verb Beach to under 14 points, while the Wildcats average 34 points a game. But South Fork defenders seem to be ready for the dial: lenge. "We've got to come out and play hard and hit them hard, that's the way we play defense," said senior fullbacklinebacker; Ryan Fenton, who leads the team in tackles with 105.

"We can't let them have any big plays." Estero's defense should also pose a challenge. During one stretch this season, it recorded three consecutive shutouts. "This is the kind of game to see how good the down people are," Estero coach Joe Hampton said. "We know they have good people and we feel ours are pretty good too." Tonight will be South Fork's first time hosting a state playoff football game Last year the Bulldogs played their first-ever playoff game at Naples-Lely aqd advanced to the second round where they lost at eventual state champion Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas.

This time, South Fork saved itself from having to make the trip across the state by posting a 5- 1 district record on the way to winning the 14-5A title. Estero comes into tonight's contest looking to erase the bitter taste of consecutive defeats fo Fort Myers. The Wildcats, making their first playoff appearance since 1993, were 9-0 before th loss to Fort Myers last Friday, which dropped them into three-way tiebreaker for the District 13-5A title. Estero beat Naples-Lely 9-0 to clinch a playoff berth, but wound up losing to Fort Myers again as an Estero fumble in die final minute paved the way for the winning score in Fort Myers' 6- 0 Fort Myers. The Friday deal was probably a lot tougher than Monday," Hampton said.

"It's one of those cases where it's the first loss of the season and you don't know how the kids are going to react We played much better on Mod-day. It's just one of those situations where we got a fumble at a bad time." yards and nine TDs this season. ABOUT PAHOKEE: The Blue Devils, as they have all season, will rely on senior quarterback Anquan Boldin, who is the area's leading passer with 1,889 yards and 27 touchdowns.
