kills Authorities say the 5-mile section of Haverhill between Belvedere Road and 45th Street is one of the most dangerous in Palm Beach County Last year 13 people died in car wrecks along that stretch And mi Jan 4 1 1-year-old Bruce Hampton Wade was critically hurt when he chased a ball into die road and was hit by a truck No one can say for certain why the four-lane road is the bloodiest but there is no doubt that rampant speeding is a factor Sheriffs deputies have recently set up speed traps along the dangerous stretch but the reckless drivers don't seem to be deterred "The compliance to traffic laws in Palm Beach County is probably at an all-time poor said Sgt Kerry Fleming of the sheriffs office need to get On New Year's Eve police handed out 56 traffic tickets along Haverhill and made three drunken driving arrests Fleming said Two weeks earlier sheriffs deputies and Florida Highway Patrol troopers handed out 96 tickets there in just a few hours 50 speeding tickets and 46 tickets to drivers for running red lights Police said Charles Lewck of West Palm Beach ran a red light on I laverhill on Feb 15 smashing into Lisa Montague's car and killing her her son and her unborn daughter Lewek was later charged with two counts of manslaughter But reckless driving is not unique to Haverhill Road and not the only thing that makes the road so treacherous Other factors heighten the danger The road recently was widened to four lanes between 45th Street and Okeechobee Boulevard and the lack of traffic lights along that stretch allows drivers to gather speed unabated said Lt Pembrook Burrows of the Florida Highway Patrol The road is also littered with retirement communities and apartment complexes many of which have traffic lights at their entrances That means driv- ers must make hasty and risky turns into oncoming traffic Two of I fatal wrecks in which four people died happened because the drivers made ill-advised left turns across traffic state troopers said
