THE PALM BEACH POST TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1996 3B Park rules put kibosh on reenactors' kabooni Ex-'Palm Beach Life' designer Anne Wholf Obituary Seminole War recreators scrub event at Jonathan Dickinson park because they can't fire guns. By PAUL REID Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Anne Petrunti Narsiff Wholf, design director of Palm Beach Life magazine for 29 years, died Sunday of cancer. She was 66. Friends of Mrs. Wholf remembered her as a woman who sought out and found beauty in the fine arts, jazz and long walks along local beaches where she would seek out shells to add to a collection that spilled from jars and cupboards throughout her house.

"If you needed to find Anne you might look in any number of galleries, or jazz clubs," said her friend and colleague, Carol Wright, "but if the wind and weather were right, Anne would go all the way to Sanibel for her shells. She found peace on those walks." Mrs. Wholf graduated from the Rhode Island School of De- sign in 1951. Ten years later she moved with her family to Lake Worth and began a job in the art department of The Palm Beach Post. In 1963 she was named art director of Palm Beach Life.

She retired from the magazine in 1992. Mrs. Wholf is survived by three daughters, Karen Marie Ellis of London, Noel Anne Bentley of Lantana, and Monica Jernigan of Lake Worth. A memorial service will be held at the Palm Beach Hilton patio at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Instead of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East West Palm Beach. 31 Schools 'Critically Overcrowded' A school district committee has identified 31 schools that it considers 'critically overcrowded' because their enrollment significantly exceeds the capacity of their permanent buildings. Portable buildings or buildings under construction are not considered permanent. SOURCE: Palm Beach County School District By HEATHER GRAULICH Palm Beach Post Staff Writer HOBE SOUND A day at Jonathan Dickinson State Park: The whisper of wind through sand pines, the tweeting of songbirds, the hum of tree frogs. The KABOOM of antique muskets? No, it's not a sound typically heard at the park, but for the past four years, a group of men who demonstrate weaponry and discuss the history of the Second Seminole Indian War have been allowed to fire their old guns as part of a reenactment at the park. But not this year. Park Manager Don Scott recently informed Stephen Mack, a Miami resident and member of the Second U.S.

Dragoons reenactment group, that the guns could not be fired during this year's event. So Mack canceled the program, planned for last weekend. "If you can't give the firearms demonstration, there's no real reason to do it," said Mack, who teaches art at an elementary school. "That's part of the living history demonstration." Scott said new policies enacted within the past year by the state Division of Recreation and Parks prohibit the firing of weapons during reenactments in state parks without supervision by a trained park service employee. Safety and liability were the primary reasons for the new policy, Scott said.

"Even though they're firing blanks, you never know what's going to happen," he said. "You could have a heck of a catastrophe." Jonathan Dickinson State Park does not have a park service employee trained in the loading, firing and storage of antique guns shot during reenactments that use only gunpowder and no bullets. Larger state parks, such as those that regularly host Civil War battle reenact- ments, have these employees on staff. They could be asked to attend an event such as the Dragoons' in the future, Scott said. "We want people to come and use these parks where there will be Seminole War encampments," Scott said.

"We're not spying we don't want this but to really be; in control of it." Mack said that in past years, 30 or people would stop by the Dragoons' encampment each day of the weekend eveht. Participants dressed like the soldiers who fought Florida's Seminole Indians in the early 1800s, trying to drive the Indians out. They told tales in the first person, giving accounts of surviving the brutal heat, fighting mosquitoes and receiving $5 a month for their efforts. But the guns were the neatest part, he said. "We give a timed event, showing how quickly a soldier should be able to fire, even using the old flintlock method," he said.

I i "It makes it more exciting than just having a museum-type thing where people walk around and look at stuff." Scott said that with more planning and park sponsorship, the Dragoons could return next year with their muskets. But that may be a long shot. Mack said the group plans to move the event to River Bend Park in Jupiter, the actual site of the Battle of the Loxahatchee the part of the Second Seminole War they have been honoring with their yearly reenactment. i 1 Area Deaths CLASSIFIED FUNERAL NOTICES CLASSIFIED MARTHA EVELYN WILLIAMS i age 83, of West Palm Beach passed away February 4, 1996.
