Graveside services Tuesday. CLASSIFIED V. MARKLIN JOHNSON, M.D. LOCAL MEDICAL PIONEER 93, of Juno Beach, FL died Friday, February 26, 1999. Dr.

Johnson was born on Christmas Day in Key West, FL in 1905. He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, then completed his medical education at Tulane University where he graduated in 1929. Following his internship and residency, he became an instructor in Pathology at the University of Florida. He joined the staff of Good Samaritan Hospital in 1931. When Dr.

Johnson began his career at Good Samaritan, he was one of only five pathologists in the State of Florida. In the early years, his practice covered an area extending from Fort Pierce to Fort Lauderdale and included small towns of the Glades area. Dr. Johnson was the only pathologist covering this area for over 20 years, until second pathologist joined the staff in 1952. During the 1940's, Dr.

Johnson served as Director of the Pathology Dept. at St. Mary's Hospital where he organized and directed the tumor clinic for many years. He established the first physician-directed clinical laboratory in the area in 1934. Known as Dr.

Johnson's Laboratory, the facility was located in the old Harvey building. In 1979, a second lab named Palm Beach Pathology was opened. Another accomplishment was Dr. Johnson's role in establishing the first blood bank in the area. During WWII, a greater supply of whole blood and plasma was needed to treat injured and burned sailors brought ashore following conflicts with German submarines.

Increased supplies were also needed to meet the demands of a growing population. Together with then Good Samaritan Hospital Administrator, John F. Wymer, a blood bank was started in 1944. In 1956, together with representatives from both Good Sam and St. Mary's, Dr.

Johnson founded the Palm Beach Blood Bank. Today, many branch stations and a fleet of blood mobiles serve 17 area hospitals and the million and a half residents of Palm Beach, Martin, Hendry, Okeechobee, and Glades Counties. Dr. Johnson was chief pathologist at Good Samaritan from 1931 to 1981. For 18 of those 50 years, he served as Chief of the Medical Staff.

In 1968, he was appointed Emeritus of the staff. On Monday, June 1, 1981, then West Palm Beach Mayor Michael Hyman proclaimed "Dr. Johnson Dr. Johnson had an extensive list of accomplishments to his He studied with some of the best in his field, including Dr. George Papanicoloon who invented the Pap Smear and is considered the father of cytology.

Dr. Johnson also studied with Dr. John K. Frost of Johns Hopkins Hospital further developing his expertise. Aside from his medical interests, he was an expert horticulturist and enjoyed deep sea fishing and hunting.

He took up golf at the age of 55 after he was elected president of the Tequesta Country Club. He currently resided at the Waterford Retirement Facility in Juno Beach where he and his late wife, Lois R. Johnson, became residents in 1982. He is survived by his daughter, Jane Elizabeth Francis of Dallas, TX: four grandsons, and, as of 8:30 pm Saturday, the 27th of February, he had seven great grandchildren. I WILL MISS YOU DADDY! ADELINA HOLMES WILDER "ADDIE" "GRANNY" Age 89 of Pahokee, Florida passed away unexpectedly February 26, 1999 at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Delay Beach. Granny was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a friend to many. Mrs. Wilder was born on Curry Crescent Drive in West Palm Beach in 1910, the daughter of the late Lincoln and Adelina Holmes, who were early West Palm Pioneers. She graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1929 and later received a lifetime Teaching Certificate from the Florida State College for Women.

She moved to Pahokee to teach elementary school in Canal Point. She married C. L. Wilder in 1933. Mrs.

Wilder was a founding member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pahokee where she was an active member of the Rosary Altar Society and was the Church Historian. She was also the Vice President of Wilder Brothers Farms, and a member of the Pahokee Garden Club. FRANCES HIDEN SHERK WIFE AND MOTHER Frances H. Sherk, age 79, of West Palm Beach, FL died of cancer at her home on February 27, 1999. She was born in Newport News, Virginia to Philip and Martha Hiden and attended the College of William and Mary.

Her first marriage, January 29, 1944, to Captain Mayo FitzHugh, also of Newport News, ended with his death in January, 1975. She is survived by her second husband, the Rev. Grant R. Sherk, whom she married August 25, 1984. Throughout her life, Mrs.

Sherk was actively involved in community service, including stints on the vestry and altar guild of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in McLean, as well as serving with the PTA at several schools in Northern Virginia. She was one of the founders of the McLean Little League in 1955, and served in various capacities with both the Little League and Babe Ruth Leagues. She was an officer with the American Camellia Society and was known in some circles as 'The Camellia Lady' for frequently providing flowers for weddings and other occasions at St. Dunstan's.

As matriarch of a golfing family, she was founder and co-owner of Woody's Golf Range in Herndon, Virginia. The Sherks are members of Ibis Golf and Country Club in West Palm Beach, and the Washington Golf and Country Club in Arlington, VA. In 1989, the Sherks relocated from McLean to West Palm Beach, where they remained until her death. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons, Gill FitzHugh of Fairfax, Philip FitzHugh of Vienna, Grayson FitzHugh of Loveland, Ohio, and Woody FitzHugh of Great Falls; a stepson, Grant Sherk of Fork Union; two stepdaughters, Linda Postelle of Falls Church, and Marna Zok of Ashburn; two sisters, Georgia Hiden of New York and Suzanne McMurran of Barboursville, VA; 18 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
