Roberts, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw, R-Fort Lauderdale, set up a toll-free campaign number in July to tell seniors how to save money on their prescriptions by buying from Canada. She learned last week that such purchases are illegal.

At a news conference Tuesday, Roberts said she'll continue the hot line after getting favorable responses from callers. The Food and Drug Administration calls buying imported drugs "potentially dangerous" and says it can't assure the safety even of drugs that are made in the U.S., shipped to Canada and re-imported. But the FDA doesn't seek action against individuals who buy imported drugs, citing "limited resources" for enforcement in July testimony before a US. Senate committee. "The FDA has said they're not prosecuting anybody.

If they're not prosecuting anybody, then obviously they have second thoughts themselves," Roberts said. Roberts noted that the Senate voted 69-30 last month to permit drug imports from Canada. But that bill, which the House has not voted on, also requires that the secretary of Health and Human Services certify that imports would save money and pose no additional safety risk. Congress passed a similar bill in 2000 with Shaw whose name Roberts did not mention at her news conference voting in favor. President Clinton signed it.

But his HHS secretary, Donna Shala-la, and her Bush administration successor, Tommy Thompson, both rejected certification because of cost and safety concerns.
