That doesn't surprise his business teacher, Cheryl Lee-Bennett, who said Darien has a list of activities he is active in, from Student Government Association, to Future Educators of America, to chorus, to the school UNITY club. And a list of projects he has volunteered for, including Delray Beach's Garlic Fest, and serving as youth minister at St. John Missionary Baptist Church. "Darien is the ideal student," she said, "I wish I could just clone him. He's an excellent role model and well-liked and respected." TEACHER OF THE WEEK Michael Makoul Timber Trace Elementary Fifth-grade teacher Michael Makoul believes his students should "be there" when they study.

That's why he encourages them to be put in the time period of history they are exploring, with roles of Patriots and Loyalists, for example. banquet Jan. 30. Cahoon is the founder of the 25-year-old organization that has a core budget of $450,000, a staff and hundreds of volunteers. The group is an ecumenical organization that operates throughout Palm Beach County, working to eliminate hunger through its food pantries, hot meal programs, after school and brown bag lunches. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge plans a dedication ceremony for Phase I of an Art Marshall Cypress Trail and Memorial Kiosk on Everglades Day Saturday. Visitors to the Cypress Trail will see a mosaic of cypress and related native plants that are preserved at the refuge, having escaped the clearing and drainage that occurred in the early 1900s.

At the northern tip of the trail is an educational kiosk built by Chris Mattel and Boy Scout Troop 197. The display is designed to teach people about the historical Cypress Forested Wetlands and what is being done by the Marshall Foundation to restore Florida's cypress swamps. Other panels describe the history of the refuge, the foundation, and highlights about Art Marshall for whom the refuge is named. The dedication will be held in conjunction with Everglades Day. Activities include canoe excursions, nature walks, musical performances, photography workshops and children's activities from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
