Mexican 'evil weevil' threatening to kill off native plants By ELIOT KLEINBERG Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Gray-green air plants that nest in trees, giving many South Florida back yards lush, mossy feel are being chomped by a half-inch bug dubbed the "evil weevil." "We are at the threshold of losing. our native air plants and, with that, microhabitats and countless organisms that have adapted to living" in them, said Heidi Aspen Rhoades of Delray Beach, an environmental educator. The nasty Mexican bromeliad weevil, believed to have been brought into the country through a South Florida nursery, has chewed on bromeliads in Florida unabated since 1989.

The beetle attacks all bromeliads, including exotic terrestrial bromeliads as well as those commonly called air plants, which attach to trees and plants and draw nutrients from debris and dust that collect on their leaves. All 11 of the bromeliads native to Florida are air plants. The half-inch insect that's attacking them got the name "evil weevil" because of the dramatic rate at which it's been destroying native bromeliads throughout South Florida, according to a University of Florida report. It's gotten so bad that two of the native varieties have been placed on an endangered list the cardinal wild pine (Tillandsia fasciculata Swartz), which has red flowers, and the giant air plant (Tillandsia utriculata), which grows 2 to 3 feet tall with dull Palm Beach. She was an active member of Na'Amat (Pioneer Women) since 1983.

a gray leaves. The Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies has started collecting and storing seeds of varieties to reintroduce once the weevil has been wiped out. The bug was first spotted in 1989 at a Broward County bromeliad nursery and i is believed to have entered in a shipment of bromeliads imported from Veracruz, Mexico. The nursery was treated, but within two months the weevil had spread north to southern Palm Beach County. It had spread to four counties by 1991 and was in the Treasure Coast by 1995.

It was in 12 counties by 1999 and by December 2000 had been spotted in 17 of Florida's 67 counties, as far north as Polk County, near Tampa. The bug has attacked bromeliads both in parks and public lands and at private homes and commercial nurseries. Adults lay eggs on plant leaves, and newborn larvae immediately start chewing their way to the leaf's si stem. Often the damage causes the plant to lose its grip on the host tree and fall off. Some insecticides designed for beetles and grubs are believed to kill the weevils, but often plants are too high on the tree to reach with sprays.

Helen was active in many community organizations. She served on the board of directors of the Opportunity School for disabled children and was elected to the Fargo Public School Board.

She also worked with her husband at FRS Industries. They were active members of First Baptist Church in Fargo. In 1972 they retired and moved to Boynton Beach where they volunteered services at Palm Beach Leisureville and were active in Seacrest Presbyterian Church. In falling health, Helen moved to Minneapolis in 1999. She is survived by her daughters, Clare Fossum and Judith Reeves; her brother and sister-in-law Milton and Patricia Ericson; her sisters-in-law Harriette Blomquist, Hazelle Martin and Iva Coulson; and many grateful nieces and nephews.

SUSAN WOLFE RICKETT Sue Rickett died peacefully at Good Samaritan Medical Center on Monday, October 28, 2002. She was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, June 15, 1917, but lived most of her life in West Palm Beach. Sue graduated from Palm Beach High School, Class of 1935 and in 1940 she married Robert Rickett, in the historic First Methodist Church on Hibiscus Sweet, now a part of City Place. As a founding member of the Junior League of the Palm Beaches, Sue served in many volunteer positions, as well as contributing her talented writing abilities. She was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of West Palm Beach, a member of the West Palm Beach Garden Club and the Rosebuds.

For many years, she enjoyed playing team tennis at Mayacoo Country Club and was also a member of the Sailfish Club of Florida. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 62 years, Robert Rickett, and two brothers Jim and Joe Wolfe. She is survived by three daughters: Diane Bollinger, Susan Farago and Tish (John) Kern; six grandchildren: John Bollinger; Steve, Katie and Kim Farago and Kinnear and Robert Kern. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and treasured friends. Sue will be especially remembered for her love of family, her capacity for joy, her wonderful wit and unique gift for lasting friendships.
