4B THE PALM BEACH POST THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 2003 CONCERT REVIEW Joe Cocker 1 intensity overcomes voice's limitations accelerated treatment, complete with Milo's hymn-like Hammond organ. The encores featured Dave Mason's rhythmic Fee-lin' Alright, and the evening's best ballad in Everytime It Rains. A medley of the Beatles' Slie Came in Through the Bathroom Window and the gospel-infused Cry Me a River closed the concert in revivalist fashion, proving that the 59-year-old Cocker still delivers ageless performances. butingatejuno.com featured some of the singer's weaker moments. Afterward, Cocker and company were near-perfect Keyboardist Nick Milo played an excellent solo on a cover of the Box Tops' The Letter, and James' slapped bass pattern propelled Unchain My Heart a 1980s hit that Cocker patterned after the version of his mentor, Ray Charles.

The Beatles' With a Little Help From My Friends (the title of Cocker's debut album) got the singer's signature de- between Cocker and drummer Jack Bruno plagued the tune. The upbeat Hitchcock Railway was a midsection highlight, featuring harmonies by James, Sharp, Keys, Black and saxophonist Derek Dyer (who also played synthesizers and congas). Sur rounding it were two of Cocker's biggest hits, the ballad You Are So Beautiful and the strutting You Can Leave Your Hat On (from the film 9'k Weeks). Both were crowd-pleasers, yet both also occurred during its early-to-middle stage. Several consecutive ballads followed, from the familiar When the Night Comes to Van Morrison's Into the Mystic, before guitarist Gene Black finally raised the energy level with his solo on Summer in the City.

Bassistvocalist Juanita James and backing singers Maxine Sharp and Amy Keys helped carry Up Miere We Belong, the CockerJennifer Warnes duet from the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman, but a tempo tug-of-war on Tuesday night, with a 90-minute onslaught that kept building up intensity. Cocker has never been a songwriter, relying on material by others from his 1969 debut album through his latest release, the live CD and DVT) Respect Yourself. He opened with the mid-tempo Tonio composition You Can't Have My Heart, then dropped the first pleasant surprise of the evening with the INXS ballad, Never Tear Us Apart. The spastic arm movements and pained facial expressions are his way of dredging up and delivering what's inside, no matter how he looks doing it And Cocker and his seven-piece backing band certainly delivered during a sold-out show at the Carefree Theatre DONALD L. ARNOLD 1925-2003 Donald Arnold, 78, a resident of Tequesta, passed away May 29, 2003 under Hospice care comfortably at his home with his wite. Cindy. A native of Auburn, Illinois, he was born May 5, 1925.

He was Vice-President of Corporate Relations for Meredith Corporation of Des Moines, Iowa, from 1968 until his retirement in June of 1990. He was formerly a partner in the Chicago law firm of Vedder, Price, Kaufman Kammholz. During World War II, Don served with the U.S. Army Infantry in Europe. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 379th Infantry, where he was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, twice.

A graduate of the University of Illinois, he received a Juris Doctor degree from De Paul University in Chicago in 1950. He learned to fly in his 40's, was an avid golfer, loved to travel, and to sing: especially at the local pub, McCarthy in Tequesta. He was always particularly happy near, or on. the water, making his retirement home on Jupiter Island and a member of the JIB Yacht Club Marina a perfect spot. He owned the red tug boat, fondly named tor his granddaughter, the "Ashley He is survived by his wife Cindy, of Tequesta, and his sister.

La Verna Segin, of Phoenix, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his first wife. Jean, with whom he had one daughter, Suzanne of Phoenix, Arizona; two sons: Mark of St. Louis, Missouri, and Scott of Gresham, Oregon: as well as three grandchildren: Matthew, David and Ashley. Many people in Palm Beach County have benefited from her efforts. He was 57 years old. He is survived by his wife, Mary Gottlieb Robbins; his son, Scott Robbins and daughter-in-law, Christine Robbins; his daughter, Stephanie Robbins Antone and son-in-law, Tom Antone: his stepchildren: Brian Gottlieb and his wife, Jenny; and Jeffrey Gottlieb and his wite, Elizabeth Hunt; and his sister, Francine Craven, and her three children. Mr. Robbins joined Palm Beach Media Group as editor-in-chief in 1996, and served as editorial director of the company's 10 publications. During his previous six years in South Florida, he served as editor-in-chief of BRIEF, an international business magazine, and worked as a freelance investigative reporter specializing in economic crimes and consumer protection.

Mr. Robbins has won numerous writing awards, and was named 1999 Editor of the Year by the Florida Magazine Association. In his more than 30 years in the communications business, Mr. Robbins also has been a marketing and media executive, and has served on the journalism faculties of Central Michigan and Long Island universities. He was the marketing manager of Citibank's New York State commercial banking division and Citicorp's asset-based subsidiaries before becoming vice president and account supervisor in charge ot Citibank's worldwide advertising at Foote Cone Belding.

In 1979, he founded Robbins Ries, a New York-based communications holding company, which included two broadcasting subsidiaries and a full-service 4A's advertisingPR agency. Mr. Robbins' editorial vision and contagious enthusiasm for the publishing business had a profound impact on Palm Beach Media Group, which experienced significant growth during his seven-year tenure. His charismatic personality and respect for those he encountered over the course of his remarkable lite serves as an inspiration to each of his countless friends and family members. Goffe, 84, passed away Saturday, June 14, alter an extended illness. Mr. Goffe is survived by his wife. Camiile; daughters: Michelle and Jerri; and a large extended family throughout rioriaa ana ine unitea siaies. ne was predeceased by his son, Bnan.

Mr. Goffe, a Florida native, was born on February 27, 1919 in McCall, Florida. He grew up in southwest Florida and enlisted in the United Stales Marine Corps on November 25, 1936. With his enlistment, he began a long and eventful career including a variety of duties during World War II. He participated in multiple assault landings with the 22nd Marines in the Marshall Islands, as well as a 1945 46 tour of duty at Tientsin, China, with Ihe 1st Marine Division.

His subsequent duties included escort of World War II dead, staff on the Leatherneck Magazine, and assignments with the MarDet aboard the USS Des Moines and the USS Baltimore. Following the war. he also servied at 8th and Washington, DC, and Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, DC. He retired Irom active duty on disability in 1960, and was permanently retired on January 1, 1965. Mr.

Goffe returned to Florida after his retirement, residing in Lake Worth. He loved the outdoors, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and shared this passion through his work as a hunting and fishing guide. He practice exemplary environmental measures for the preservation and renewal of wildlife in Florida. In this way, he contributed to the enjoyment ot this resouce for future generations. The service to commemorate Mr.

Goffe's life will be held Saturday, June 21 at Tillman Funeral Home, 2170 S. Military Trail, west Palm Beach, Florida. Groover, age 72 passed away June 18, 2003 at JFK Medical Center after an extended illness Emmett. a lifelong resident of Florida, was born in Lake Worth on March 28, 1931 and was a graduate of Palmfieach High Class of 1948. As an avid athlete, he lettered in basketball, baseball, and football while attending Palm Beach High.

Emmett also served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957.
