Colleen got the would-be cymbals from the kitchen and tiptoed into Samantha's room. With a pan in each hand, she slammed them together. Samantha didn't flinch. Today was a hard day. I've been crying, Colleen wrote on Samantha's baby calendar a few days later.

Can you hear me? But Samantha's hearing test two months later showed normal hearing in the baby's left ear with slightly reduced hearing in the right. 1 So why didn't she respond to the clanging pans? No one is sure. Colleen thinks maybe it was all the noisy commotion in the NICU ward. Beepers and buzzers and people constantly coming and going. Samantha had learned to sleep through it all.

Or maybe the neurological makeup for her hearing was intact all along, but just too immature during the early tests, doctors say. Whatever the reason, Colleen and Jeff Bishop don't care. They just know they've made it over one more harrowing, emotional hurdle. Now it's time for something easy, something fun. Like mastering peek-a-boo.

"She's almost got it," says Mom. SAMANTHA From ID just 4 pounds, 4 ounces. While she was in the hospital, Samantha did not have any brain bleeds internal bleeding that often causes brain damage in premature babies. But still, there was so much to worry about: Her development skills. Her eyes.

Her hearing. All of that can be affected when babies are born so early. The weeks after the homecoming were nice and peaceful after three months of crazed exhaustion. They slept. They cuddled.

They slept some more. But about a month into it, Colleen knew something wasn't right. Samantha was eating well and gaining weight, but there was a nagging fear her mom just couldn't shake. Colleen called St. Mary's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where Samantha had spent her early months, and talked to one of her favorite doctors, who just happened to be on duty.

She blurted out her worry: don't think Samantha can hear. He talked to her for a while, got her calmed down a little, then made a suggestion: Wait until the baby's sleeping, then take some pots and pans out of the cabinet Beverly Sellers and Christopher Burr Gardner were married April 12 at the First Presbyterian Church of North Palm Beach. B00DMAN The Washington Post Poor women experience extraordinarily high levels of severe physical and sexual abuse, according to a six-year federally financed study of 436 mothers living in Worcester, a city of 169,000 residents of whom 15 percent fall below the poverty level. The study, published in the April issue of the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, is the most extensive epidemiological investigation into the physical and emotional health of women who head families with very low incomes. The study found that 83 percent of those surveyed, about half of whom were homeless, had been victims of physical or sexual abuse.

Most had been abused by the age of 12, and nearly 20 percent had required medical treatment for their injuries. During a series of extensive face-to-face interviews, researchers led by Angela Browne of the New York State Research Institute on Addictions and Ellen Bas-suk of the Harvard School of Public Health asked poor women about their experience of violence. As children 60 percent of the women said they had been victims i it Mrs. Scolnick Engagements (and rehearsal dinners!)
