Nonetheless; the 7-foot Nigerian-born chairman of Phi Slama Jama put himself one-up on Boston Celtics All-Star forward Larry Bird in an abbreviated one-on-one session at a recent B-C All-Star Basketball Camp in Rensselaer, Ind. Olajuwon, who will be a junior at Houston beginning next fall, was seated in the stands while Bird was putting on a demonstration for a group of high school players at the St. Joseph's College gymnasium, and was spotted by Bird. "Akeem. Come on down here.

I want to use you a little bit," shouted Bird. The pair engaged in a slam, dunk contest and eventually began playing one-on-one. Bird missed each of the half-dozen shots he attempted. "I couldn't score on him today," he said. "But I'll guarantee you I'll score on him someday (in the NBA)." Final score: Olajuwon 4, Bird 0.

But the South American country's men's basketball team that was left with no Way to return to its homeland after spending its own money getting to the World University Games in Edmonton, Alberta, will get its wish. Also signing contracts were cornerback Fulton Walker and rookie defensive end Charles Benson of Baylor, said Joe Robbie, owner of the National Football League club. The Dolphins, defending AFC champions, chose Robyv in the sixth round of the NFL draft this spring, the first time the club has ever drafted a punter.

Roby, whose 49.8-yard season average in 1981 set a collegiate record, averaged 45.6 yards on 172 kicks during four years at Iowa. He's expected to make for stiff competition for Orosz, a free agent who beat out George Roberts in 1981, averaged 38.7 yards per punt last year and has not had a punt blocked in 118 tries with the Dolphins. Benson and Roby were due to report to training camp this morning. Walker, a sixth-round draft choice in 1981, had the finest day of his career returning kicks in Super Bowl XVII. He set a Super Bowl record by returning four kickoffs 190 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown in the first half.

No contract terms were revealed. Steelers' Davis Has Blood Disorder LATROBE, Pa. Pittsburgh Steelers' running back Russell Davis says he is suffering from the same kind of BARRY WINDHAM versus OX BAKER BUNIf HOUSE-MIKE GRAHAM VERSUS BOBBY DUNCUM rare blood disorder that once caused former Steelers' defensive back J.T. Thomas to miss an entire season. Davis plans to play this season, but said he is still "saying my prayers regularly." "I just have to see if I can maintain conditioning," said Davis, who spent his first four seasons as a backup to Franco Harris.

"The fortunate thing is that I got treatment a few months back. In J.T.'s case, he had a flare-up right before the start of training camp and he had to miss the entire (1978) season." Doctors still don't know how to treat Davis' disease, which is a form of Boeck's Sarciodosis, a rare blood problem common to male blacks in their early to mid 20s. To ease his discomforts, Davis has been treated with stereid medications. "I felt 100 percent better after that," Davis told the Pittsburgh Press. Davis, a former Michigan star who played his high school football at Woodbridge, plans to report to the Steelers' training camp Friday with the other veterans who aren't already in camp.
