"This is very time-consuming work," Foley said. "We are doing this as a favor to the local business community and the county commission, and if we had another body or two in this office we could do it much more expeditiously." The county commission has scheduled a public hearing on the issue for March. johnlantiguapbpost.com juliuswhighampbpost.com FUNERAL NOTICES WAGES from IB Earlier this year, Heart said, the Palm Beach County Commission backed the idea of a wage-theft ordinance. Modeled on a measure in Miami-Dade County, it would have created a vehicle for fast investigation and processing of wage-theft claims. The only way to try to recoup wages now is through the legal system.

But the commission eventually tabled the proposal. Heart said it was because business groups and the Florida Retail Federation opposed it. She said the same pro-business groups tried to get statewide bills passed that would have banned local wage-theft ordinances, but those bills failed. "We have steadfastly held that it is not necessary to create a new level of bureaucracy to deal with this issue," said Mike Jones, head of the Economic Council of Palm Beach County. "There are remedies available inside state and county law." Jones said such wage-theft cases are now referred to nonprofit Legal Aid.

Staff attorney John Foley said since March, when the program began, 128 people have claimed they were cheated by employers.
