PAGELABELTAG B4 THE PALM BEACH POST REAL NEWS STARTS HERE I TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 2015 Cerabino hers to demand that Florida lawmakers prevent the police officers from stating their opinion on the gun bill, because it amounts to lobbying while on the job. "You, the taxpayers, are picking up the financial tab for these Chiefs to lobby against your constitutional rights rights they are sworn to protect," the letter said. This sort of bullying isn't new. Last year, Capt. Terrence Gorman, an Army lawyer serving as a staff attorney for the Florida National Guard, testified that he thought another NRA-inspired bill was a bad idea.

It's the bill, which is also zipping its way toward approval this year, that allows legal gun owners to carry concealed weapons, even if they aren't concealed weapons permit holders, while they are under mandatory evacuation orders from their homes during hurricanes and other emer gencies. Gorman told lawmakers that it would be dangerous to give untrained civilians the authority to walk around with concealed weapons during stressful mass evacuations. "People aren't thinking clearly," Gorman testified, "and when they aren't thinking clearly, they probably shouldn't have a weapon shoved into the back of their pants. Especially when you're talking about thousands of people that have to be evacuated." The NRA's Hammer didn't like Gorman's testimony, so she silenced him by going straight to Gov. Scott to complain that the Florida National Guard was not being helpful on the bill.

Scott responded promptly by announcing that he supported the bill. At the next legislative hearing, Gorman's commander spoke, disavowing the testimony of Gorman, his own legal counsel. That's how things work in Florida. Helping the NRA to sell guns under the false umbrella of its flimsy constitutional claims trumps everything, including public safety. So don't be surprised if the governor and Florida's legislative leaders do the NRA's bidding again this year by silencing the voices of the university police chiefs.

continued from B1 ate President Andy Gardiner and House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, telling them to stop the chiefs from continuing to speak against the bill. "State University Campus Police are using your tax dollars to lobby against the Second Amendment rights of Florida citizens," Hammer wrote. Buxton Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home, Okeechobee, FL. FRAGAKIS, James Gregory "Big Jim" It is with great sadness that we announce that James "Big Jim" Gregory Fragakis born L. December 2, 1923, passed away March 18, 2015. Big Jim, as he was known to all who met him, was born in Marquette, Michigan. His parents moved to Brooklyn, New York and that is where he spent his younger years until joining the Navy at the tender age of 18.

His basic training was at Sampson Naval Base in Geneva, New York and he was then transferred to the Great Lakes Naval Station training as a fire engineer. His Naval duty was on the USS Honolulu, a light cruiser, which was torpedoed during an engagement during the Leyte Gulf War. In addition, Big Jim saw active combat at Guadalcanal, Saipan and Guam. He received a medical and honorable discharge from the Navy in 1945 and returned to Brooklyn to work in the family business. He along with his wife Bess and one young son moved to Miami Beach in 1955.

He then moved to West Palm Beach in 1956. In 1975 he and Bess founded Executive Coffee Service Inc. Big Jim volunteered in numerous organizations during his professional career. In his younger years he was active in the West Palm Beach Junior Chamber of Commerce known then as the Jaycees. He joined the Westside Kiwanis in 1986 and also was one of five founders of a charitable organization by the name of Alzheimer's Community Care.

He remained active in both up to his passing. Big Jim was a devoted supporter of his Naval buddies who served on the USS Honolulu and attended their annual reunions. Because the membership had decreased to a very few, the reunions ended in 2014. His other project was to preserve the memory of Captain David McCambell by advocating, tirelessly, to have the Palm Beach International Airport be named the McCambell International Airport, just as the other World War ll ace pilot Butch O'Hare was honored by the citizens of Chicago. Butch O'Hare and Captain David McCambell were the only two ace Naval pilots to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor because of their extraordinary service during World War II conflicts recorded in the annals of notable Naval battles.

Though not successful in renaming the airport, Big Jim was instrumental with other supporters in having a section of the airport named "Captain David McCambell This area hosts educational pictures and a video which demonstrates Captain McCambell's outstanding contribution to the end of World War II that took place in the Pacific. Big Jim leaves his wife of 65 years, Bess Pappas Fragakis; two sons, Gregory and John Fragakis; four grandchildren, Kyle, Tori, Kirk and Brian Fragakis and one great-granddaughter, Kylie. A Memorial Service will be held at Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Alzheimer's Community Care Headquarters Rotunda, 800 Northpoint Parkway, West Palm Beach, FL with a reception following to celebrate his life of caring for others. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Community Care, 800 Northpoint Parkway, Suite 101-B, West Palm Beach, FL 334067 andor Westside Kiwanis, PO Box 16995, West Palm Beach, FL 33416. A Private Funeral will be held at the National Veterans Cemetery, Lake Worth, FL.
